Lexy Fridell gives a wondrous reading of this story about a girl who discovers that the paintings in the old house her family has just moved into are portals to disturbing worlds. Olive is soon caught up in the mystery presented by the house and the three cats that appear to be guarding the premises. Fridell uses her naturally sweet voice with delightful agility, presenting a wide variety of voices and accents. The haughty drawl of Horatio, the Cockney sincerity of Leopold, the wild enthusiasm of the imaginative Harvey, and the distracted concern of Olive’s academic parents are standouts. This is an altogether sublime performance that will keep listeners riveted to the end. K.O. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
