Overview

"The Buffalo and Crocodile Hunters of the Northern Territory" is the story of the men who hunted the feral buffalo and wild crocodiles of the Northern Territory of Australia between the First and Second World Wars and for a few post-war years. They lived a life full of danger as the animals were caught for their hides, so they had to be shot at dangerously close range to prevent damage to the skins. The men and horses who hunted the wild buffalo galloped over uneven ground at top speed until they were alongside the beast with huge and deadly horns. Deaths to both man and horse were not unknown ... this was their 'dry' season occupation. During the 'wet' the horses had a welcome rest, but the men had their sights set on the large, cunning and ferocious estuarine crocodiles, speared at close range from a flimsy bark canoe. This is their story.
