The Buffalo Soldier is the tale of Montana's Trail of Tears. It's a narrative that's been buried for 120 years, resurrected by author Rob Bauer's own research. You can't find this original story in print anywhere else.
1896, Butte, Montana. Orphan Clarence Duval is now 19 years old and has become the guardian of a young Irish-Chippewa girl, Mary Healy, following the death of Mary's parents. While trying to return Mary to her family in the East, the pair become separated when Clarence is forced to join the Buffalo Soldiers, an African American cavalry unit, in a case of mistaken identity. Mary, meanwhile, takes shelter with Montana's Cree people.
At the same time, the state of Montana has decided to deport the Cree to Canada, and the Buffalo Soldiers get the job. Clarence must find a way to escape the Buffalo Soldiers yet save Mary from deportation before time runs out and she's separated from her family forever.
Set against the raw natural beauty of 1896 Montana, The Buffalo Soldier is an epic tale of heroism, sacrifice, tragedy, and love that combines the shock of a forced deportation with the coming of age of a young girl forced to grow up far too quickly. Don't miss the story that's been brought back to life after more than a century.
