Overview

The Buffalo Soldier is the tale of Montana's Trail of Tears. It's a narrative that's been buried for 120 years, resurrected by author Rob Bauer's own research. You can't find this original story in print anywhere else.

1896, Butte, Montana. Orphan Clarence Duval is now 19 years old and has become the guardian of a young Irish-Chippewa girl, Mary Healy, following the death of Mary's parents. While trying to return Mary to her family in the East, the pair become separated when Clarence is forced to join the Buffalo Soldiers, an African American cavalry unit, in a case of mistaken identity. Mary, meanwhile, takes shelter with Montana's Cree people.

At the same time, the state of Montana has decided to deport the Cree to Canada, and the Buffalo Soldiers get the job. Clarence must find a way to escape the Buffalo Soldiers yet save Mary from deportation before time runs out and she's separated from her family forever.

Set against the raw natural beauty of 1896 Montana, The Buffalo Soldier is an epic tale of heroism, sacrifice, tragedy, and love that combines the shock of a forced deportation with the coming of age of a young girl forced to grow up far too quickly. Don't miss the story that's been brought back to life after more than a century.

About the Author

A former college history professor, Rob Bauer now brings his considerable knowledge of the past into his historical novels. His books strike a balance of creative storytelling and meticulous historical accuracy. One of his books, The Buffalo Soldier, even contains some of his own original research about 1890s Montana. He writes a history blog on his website, robbauerbooks.com/blog, where he reviews historical fiction books and blogs about the historical influence of things as diverse as Martin Luther King, Jr., leaded gasoline, fascism, and mosquitoes.

In addition to his historical novels, Rob is also a huge baseball fan and has written four nonfiction books on baseball history. In 2019 he gave a presentation at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

When not writing, Rob lives at the beach and tries to maintain the fiction that he’s a runner. To that end, he swears he’ll finish a marathon someday.
