The 1807 first edition of William Roscoe's popular The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast has unique, whimsical illustrations. It had quite a large number of sequels and imitations, but the 1808 The Butterfly's Funeral, in a similar style but by a different author, has been chosen to be printed with it in this volume. The text has been carefully retyped to match the original, with the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation intact-including the varying forms of the letter S. The pictures for The Butterfly's Funeral have been taken from the back of the book and inserted into the text. The frontispieces of the books have been placed after new title pages with the names of the originally anonymous illustrators, who were later identified-the original title pages have also been included, as illustrations on the new ones. Blank pages have been excluded, and pages throughout have been embellished with butterfly and grasshopper images from the cover of the 1807 book. The result is a charming taste of early 1800s children's literature, intended for anyone who enjoys reading very old books. Note: Inconsistent and apparently incorrect spelling, etc. is because of this book's age. The text has been reproduced as closely as possible to the original, as a historical curiosity. In other words, the typos are intentional.
