Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A cerebral mystery . . . [and] a moving look at how evil, having seized political power, can cripple nations and crush souls.

Library Journal - Audio

04/01/2016
In 1987 Buenos Aires, the beautiful Lisandra Puig is found dead on the sidewalk below her sixth-floor apartment, and her psychoanalyst husband, Vittorio, becomes the main suspect. When Eva Maria, one of his patients, offers to help find the killer, Vittorio asks her to listen to secret recordings of his patients. At the same time, Eva Maria's story of losing a daughter five years earlier during the country's "dirty war" begins to unfold. Unfortunately, her grief has resulted in a drinking problem that undermines her credibility. Basing the novel on a true story, Grémillon (The Confidant) has written a suspenseful psychological thriller with a surprisingly unexpected ending. However, the story frequently moves back and forth in time and changes perspectives, making it difficult to follow, especially for listeners of the audio version. Listeners unfamiliar with Argentinian history may be confused by references to the military junta that ruled the country from 1976 to 1983. Tim Andres Pabon reads in a fine baritone, capturing each character's personality with insight and clarity. VERDICT Recommended for patient listeners seeking a mystery with an intriguing historical subtext. ["This tense novel of both the personal and the political touches on the ugly truth of a brutal regime while also examining jealousy and betrayal, with disturbing twists and turns": LJ 2/1/16 review of the Penguin hc.]—Nancy R. Ives, SUNY Geneseo
