THE CHRONIC ARGONAUTS begins with a third-person account of the arrival of the mysterious Dr. Moses Nebogipfel to the peaceful Welsh town of Llyddwdd. The rural folk of the area grow to fear Nebogipfel and eventually storm the inventor's "devilish" workshop in an effort to stop the supposed witchcraft. Nebogipfel escapes with one other person—the sympathetic Reverend Elijah Ulysses Cook—in a mysterious machine. The remainder of the story is the Reverend's short retelling of the events that took place that night and afterwards, and the reverend's revelations of the nature of Dr. Nebogipfel.
