Overview

This is an instruction manual for parents and physicians to treat chronic bladder and/or bowel incontinence. Bowel incontinence is the most distressing dysfunction with its penetrating and pervasive foul odors where the child tends to be most resistant to correction. Efforts are focused for one hour in the day with short 3 minute sits and the use of suppositories and enemas to assure a successful bowel movement. Done daily the soiling stops and continuation results in a learning curve with fewer and shorter sits required without the suppository or enema. Urinary continence is addressed step by step for either or both day and night occurrences. The parents discover their original child with success.

About the Author

Robert W. Collins, Ph.D. is a retired, but active Clinical Psychologist with an advanced degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. He has left academia and his office practice in Western Michigan to oversee the updating of his Clean Kid Manual that assists parents and physicians in rescuing their children from an endless cycle of bladder and bowel incontinence with endless heartbreaking conflict. Dr. Collins brings a unique perspective to this medical arena with a break in the natural cycle of control over a natural bodily function that has been broken. The sequence of urgency signal recognition, holding, finding the toilet, and, finally releasing pee or poo has been replaced by an overwhelming motivation to hold or prevent emptying. Exhortation, logic, punishment, ignoring, tears, and snake oil; all have failed to halt this run-away issue. The fact that voiding appears to be so natural and easy followed by the pleasure of “relief” makes the failure to “GO” so frustrating and incomprehensible to all of the rest of us. Dr. Collins has come to view that the entire recognition, holding, releasing sequence for continence must be reestablished through a course of rehabilitation, not a piece meal approach. This is set forth in its entirety in this, the 9th Revision of his Clean Kid Manual which physicians and parents can follow through with. Parents can follow the manual on their own, with other parents in an on-line forum, or the assistance of a health provider.
Dr. Collins’es publication validating the Bedwetting Alarm has been recognized as a “Citation Classic” for its recognition in the reference lists of other scientific publications. The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders made up of many International Gastroenterologists (iffgd.org) published his article, “Soiling Solutions®: An Internet and Manual Based Approach to Treating Encopresis” in it’s quarterly journal, Digestive Health Matters, Spring 2009, (v18,1).
