Description: This is a compendium of the current evidence-based practices concerning vaccines for children and adults.
Purpose: This book provides the answers that clinicians can use to respond to their patients' questions, saying, "This is the evidence studied by the experts." As the discussions about, and consequences of, not receiving vaccinations are headline news, this is a very worthy endeavor, and this is a very helpful book for clinicians.
Audience: The audience is every single person in America today — clinicians, laypersons, administrators, policymakers and legislators. Without a doubt, this is a book to be quoted by and to all.
Features: The book is divided into three parts: an introduction; vaccine and vaccine-preventable disease information summaries; and potential adverse events following immunization. The introduction begins with how to talk to patients about vaccines, with suggestions such as rather than asking if a patient would like a flu shot, declaring, "It is time to get your flu shot." It suggests relying on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines in discussing vaccines and using a five-step approach with hesitant patients. One chapter in the introduction section covers monitoring vaccine safety. It addresses the research involved in determining the safety and efficacy of vaccines and the post-licensure surveillance and provides helpful talking points clinicians may use and rely on. Another chapter addresses vaccines and pregnancy and breastfeeding. Part 2 has chapters for each of the currently licensed vaccines that outline the ACIP recommendations, websites for additional information and a description of the disease the vaccine prevents, how to administer the vaccine, contraindications and precautions, effectiveness, safety, references, and the highly valuable talking points. Part 3 is a series of questions and answers about potential specific adverse effects, particularly those conditions that are the basis for much of the social media misinformation.
Assessment: This is one of the most important books for clinicians to have available today as every one of them has been and will be challenged with these questions. This is one of the very few must-have books.
