The Color of Justice
1964: Justice, Mississippi, is a town divided. When attorney Coop Lindsay agrees to defend a black man accused of murdering a white teenager, the bribes and death threats don't intimidate him. As he prepares for the case of a lifetime, the young lawyer knows that innocent or guilty, he will no longer welcome in Justice. 2014: To some, the result of the trial still feels like a fresh wound even fifty years later, when Coop's grandson arrives in Justice seeking answers to the questions unresolved by the trial that changed his family's legacy. When a new case is presented, again pitting white against black, this third generation Lindsay may have the opportunity he needs to right the wrongs of the past.

Set in Justice, MS, this gripping story follows two murder cases and two generations of lawyers in two sweltering Junes, 50 years apart. In 1964, white attorney Coop Lindsay takes on the case of African American Calvin Ross, who is accused of brutally murdering a white girl. Racial hatred keeps this small town segregated and escalates the emotions of the case to dangerous levels, as Coop rushes to prove Calvin's innocence and find the real murderer. Despite a mountain of obstacles, including death threats and a kidnapping, Coop wins his case, only to disappear with Calvin the very next day, never revealing the killer. A half century later, in 2016, Coop's grandson returns to town to find out who murdered Becky and what happened to Coop and Calvin. He finds himself embroiled in another case that eerily mirrors his grandfather's and includes some of the same people. Charlie Thurston, whose Southern drawl brings the Mississippi summer heat to life, perfectly times the rich cast of characters and the shocking plot twists. This thrilling courtroom drama is fast-paced, riveting, and sure to electrify a daily commute. VERDICT Recommended to fans of Michael Connelly's The Lincoln Lawyer. ["A fast-paced, plot-driven tale of suspense… The graphic details of life in the deep South during the civil rights movement and today's civil unrest will resonate with readers": LJ 11/15/14 review of the Abingdon hc.]—Terry Ann Lawler, Phoenix P.L.

Collins's (The Cutting Edge; Darkness Before Dawn) gripping legal thriller features two generations of Mississippi lawyers who dare to take racially charged cases. In 1964 Justice, MS, Coop Lindsay, a white attorney, is asked by an African American woman to help her grandson, who has been charged with rape and murder. The town is heavily divided over the issue, and, ultimately, Coop is killed and the defendant disappears. Fifty years later, Coop's grandson returns to the town to take on an eerily similar case. As he digs for the evidence, he finds clues to the identity of his grandfather's killer that will help him solve the current and past cases. VERDICT Collins has written a fast-paced, plot-driven tale of suspense that is reminiscent of Greg Iles's Natchez Burning. The graphic details of life in the deep South during the civil rights movement and today's civil unrest will resonate with readers.
