About the Author

London-born Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) pursued a variety of careers including merchant, soldier, secret agent, and political pamphleteer. He wrote books on economics, history, biography, and crime. But he is best remembered for his fiction, which he began to write late in his life and which includes the novels Moll Flanders, Roxana, and the celebrated Robinson Crusoe.

In April 1705, when Defoe (1661-1731) published The True-Born Englishman, he was a little worried that he might end up in hiding or in jail again, whence earlier works and financial difficulties had led him. Within an imaginary voyage to the moon, he satirizes the intellectual and moral currents of the time, praises China's contribution to world knowledge tongue-in-cheek, presents a Whiggish version of the historical events of the previous 45 years, and offers his personal view of the circumstances that led to his late troubles.
