Among the topics are alternative nomenclature, bio assays, gene structure and chromosomal localization, receptor distribution, and signal transduction. Description: This is a database of cytokines, growth factors, and their receptors. Properties, sequence, accession information and function are described.This is a second edition, appropriate in a rapidly devleoping area.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide investigators with a comprehensive list of known cytokines, together with their key properties. Cognate receptors are included as well. These are desirable goals. The format is concise and should serve most readers well.
Audience: This book will be of use to investigators in the field — advanced graduate students and research fellows as well as laboratory directors. The authors are active in the area.
Features: Cytokines represent a large and growing cadre of molecules whose functions involve regulation of virtually all cellular behavior. This book provides an up-to-date listing of this type of molecule (includes growth factors, bone morphogenetic proteins, chemoattractants) and their receptors. The material is presented with a brief description of function, amino acid sequence, gene structure, chromosomal location and properties. An appendix provides links to appropriate web sites and a list of cytokine standards. This class of molecules includes most of those responsible for development, inflammatory responses, proliferation, and apoptosis. Any investigator wishing to rapidly obtain information about one or another member of this group will be able to access relevant data easily in this book. Comparable data can also be acquired through the net but the links already provided here are valuable and may not always be found electronically. The information here could readily have been prepared in electronic format, something that any future edition should consider.
Assessment: This is a useful book that helps sort out the cacophony of shorthand appellations in this field. Investigators in the area will welcome this. Given the rapid addition of new members, this second edition is worthwhile.
