Gentle Reader, Let me say straight off, it was not my idea to trap England's greatest hero and most eligible bachelor, the Earl of Greystone, into marrying me. My uncle, Lord Charlwood, was the moving force behind that little plot. If my father hadn't been murdered and left me in Charlwood's power, none of this would have happened. So now I am Lady Greystone, a countess and a wife. Learning to be the first is not that difficult. Learning to be the second would be much easier if only I weren't in danger of tumbling head over heels in love with the one person who is beyond my reach--my husband. If I cannot win Adrian's love, however, I am determined to win vengeance for my father. I have vowed to unmask his murderer, and I don't care what kind of danger I may court in doing so. Award-winning author Joan Wolf began writing her first novel when she was 11. It was about a boy and a horse living in Wyoming. At the time she was living in New York City. Even at 11 she was interested in writing about people whose backgrounds were different from hers. Since then she has written 53 novels ranging throughout time, with the Regency period one of her favorites.

When Kate Fitzgerald's horse-trader father is killed, she's placed with her malicious uncle, who spitefully maneuvers her into marriage with Adrian, Earl of Greystone. Waterloo hero Greystone accepts the unfortunate situation, but Kate falls deeply in love. Against the colorful racetrack background of the running of the Guineas at Newmarket, she schemes to entrap the aristocrat who murdered her father. One caveat: Kate is wonderful, though a bit dense; it takes her forever to realize Adrian cares for her. (Nov.)

Compromised and tricked into marriage by the sadistic machinations of her uncle, Kate Fitzgerald and Adrian Woodrow, Earl of Greystone, try to make the best of things. Murder and mystery add suspense to this romance, which features characters you enjoy (despite the heroine's somewhat illogical jealousy and not-always-credible reactions), some nice subplots, and an occasional glimpse of the darker side of Regency life. The heroine's first-person narrative provides a somewhat Gothic touch. Returning to the Regency period after a foray into other literary areas, Wolf (The Reindeer Hunters, Onyx, 1995) delivers a lively, sensual story that her fans will be waiting for. Readers may also find romances by Amanda Quick and Julie Garwood of interest.
