Peter Benchley wrote THE DEEP in 1976, after his blockbuster success, JAWS. Made into a successful film in 1977, the novel gains new life in this production, its first adaptation to audio. Honeymooners Gail and David Sanders dive for treasure on the reefs off Bermuda. Their treasure-seeking attracts the attention of local salvage experts and deadly criminals. They find more than they bargain for, including seventeenth-century Spanish pieces of eight, WWII ampoules filled with morphine, and some tenacious sharks—above and below the water. Although the characters are pretty standard fare, Mark Feuerstein's narration gives each a distinctive personality. He's especially good as the crusty Scotsman, Treece, and he keeps the action-filled underwater sequences intense. A tropical audio-escape for adventure lovers during those long winter nights.
