Description: Now in its third edition, this is one of the few books on the diabetic foot that manages to put it all together, as is suggested by the subtitle: Medical and Surgical Management. First published in 2002, with a subsequent edition in 2006, this edition has expanded details on the pathogenesis of the diabetic foot.
Purpose: It is based upon the many of years of experience achieved by members of one of the oldest multidisciplinary diabetic foot centers in the world. As diabetes continues to make its presence felt in epidemic proportions on a global scale, this book is not only desirable, but also necessary. The objectives are met!
Audience: Written primarily for physicians, surgeons, and nurses who are involved in the treatment of the foot and ankle in diabetes, it will be of use to others too, including researchers, residents, and students. For podiatrists particularly, this book will prove extremely useful. The authors are recognized nationally and internationally in this field, and they are supported by more than 50 contributors from various specialties and backgrounds.
Features: The 26 chapters are grouped into four parts covering clinical features, pathophysiology (expanded from the previous edition), management, and preventive care. There is good use of color plates, diagrams, and tables and, overall, the appearance of the book is pleasing. Its main drawback is its physical size. At some 530-plus pages in hardcover, it is more of a reference than a readily usable book.
Assessment: This is a staple for those involved in the treatment of the diabetic foot. This book does it all in terms of addressing this problem on a more comprehensive basis than others do. Its main competitors are Managing the Diabetic Foot, 2nd edition, Edmonds and Foster (Blackwell, 2005) and others by the same authors, including Diabetic Foot Care: Case Studies in Clinical Management, Foster and Edmonds (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011). Surgical Reconstruction of the Diabetic Foot and Ankle, Zgonis (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2009) clearly offers more on technique. The strength of this book is its comprehensive approach, which will be the distinguishing factor from its competitors.
