Description: This multiauthored (73 contributors from 9 countries) book provides an up-to-date review of the basic pathophysiology and biochemistry of diabetic nephropathy and its clinical aspects. A collection of essays covers novel ideas in pathogenesis, use of innovative techniques for better understanding of the disease process, promising new strategies for prevention and early screening, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art therapies.
Purpose: The objective is to increase the understanding of the basis for abnormalities in diabetic renal disease, as well as to provide a better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diabetes.
Audience: It is written for researchers and clinicians with a particular interest in diabetic nephropathy. It is well suited for basic scientists who would like to get updated on the clinical aspects and impact of their research laboratory endeavors. In addition, clinical investigators or practicing physicians will appreciate the significant progress in basic science that underpins advances made in the care of diabetic patients. As this is not a traditional textbook, other health professionals will find this book helpful if they already have a reasonable understanding of diabetic nephropathy.
Features: The book has two major sections. Section I has 18 chapters covering the pathophysiology and biochemistry of diabetic kidney disease. Section II has 12 chapters related to relevant clinical issues. Both sections are subdivided into subheadings with corresponding chapters that flow in a logical manner. Most notable in Section I are the chapters discussing the role of angiotensin II and its receptors as causative factors (chapter 1), the relationship between proteinuria and interstitial fibrogenesis (chapter 3), the role of mRNA translation (chapter 6), and the pathogenetic importance of connective tissue growth factor (chapter 10), transforming growth factor beta signal transduction (chapter 12), hepatic growth factor (chapter 13), and the role of proteomics in the investigation of diabetic nephropathy (chapter 14). Section II provides a comprehensive review of genetics and risk, histopathology, diagnosis and treatment, and related abnormalities. Noteworthy chapters include the structure of human diabetic nephropathy (chapter 21), the treatment of advanced renal disease (chapter 24), the use of ACE/ARB (chapter 25), and the diabetic relationship between retinopathy and nephropathy (chapter 27). The gray tone figures in general are quite good.
Assessment: This is a very good basic science and clinical update for scientists and clinicians interested in the pathogenesis and management of diabetic renal disease.
