About the Author

Dr. Robert Sadoff is the author of 12 books on forensic psychiatry, over 100 Journal articles and over 30 chapters in others' books. He is board certified in Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Legal Medicine. He is the founder and director of the forensic psychiatry fellowship program at the University of Pennsylvania. He has examined over 10,000 individuals charged with crimes and over 3,000 charged with homicide. He is the recipient of numerous Honors and Awards in forensic psychiatry, including the prestigious Isaac Ray Award and the Manfred Guttmacher Award for best publication in forensic psychiatry for 1993.

Description: Authors well known to those familiar with the practice of forensic psychiatry have all contributed to this book, edited by Robert Sadoff, MD, one of the most prolific writers in the field. It attempts to cover the full span of the subspecialty, from its inception to ideas about where it may be heading.
Purpose: Written by experienced educators and practitioners in the field, the book attempts to summarize the "evolution of forensic psychiatry," including its involvement in other subspecialty areas also intimately involved in the justice system.
Audience: While useful for anyone interested in forensic psychiatry's humble beginnings and its emergence as an indispensable part of many legal proceedings, this book's primary target is forensic practitioners, educators, and trainees.
Features: This book progresses from a detailed description of the history of the subspecialty through the training of forensic psychiatry fellows to the interaction between forensic psychiatry and other areas of medicine. It concludes with a section highlighting future directions. There are limited graphics, although the appendixes include a valuable list of suggested readings that incorporate classic articles and books with more recent titles.
Assessment: This book is unique in its structure and purpose when compared to other forensic titles. It provides insight into the beginning of the subspecialty from some of the people who were there when practitioners in the field were first getting organized and deciding on a vision for the future. However, the fascinating portion of this book is actually the final chapters, namely the sections on future directions. Topics, such as linking brain and behavioral measures and indispensable forensic psychiatry and psychology, are rich and thoughtful discussions sure to inspire writers and thinkers to consider their own visions of the future.
