About the Author

Gary S. Schwartz, MD, is a comprehensive ophthalmologist in private practice in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches optics, refraction, and surgical techniques to ophthalmology residents and ophthalmic technologist students. He has received awards for his skills as a teacher from both medical students and ophthalmology residents at the University of Minnesota.

Description: This reference book is designed to guide the reader through the steps and skills necessary for examining patients with eye and vision related problems.
Purpose: According to the author, this book is geared towards providing only the essential information necessary to perform the history and physical examination of the patient in the eye clinic. It does not include treatment or management options. Most texts written today dwell on treatment only and minimize the important skills and techniques involved in the history and examination. The author met this very worthy objective.
Audience: The easy to read format and lack of medical lingo allow this book to be read and used by anyone from the novice to the expert. However it will be most valuable for the student or resident new to the eye clinic setting. The author is well-respected and has both an academic affiliation and private practice.
Features: This book starts with the important basics of history taking. Next a brief discussion of optics and refraction is included. Even though performing the refraction is more of an art then science, the book did a commendable job of describing the procedure in sufficient detail to produce an accurate and comfortable spectacle prescription. The next section covers the external examination including the slit lamp, gonioscopy and tonometry procedures. The book concludes with the internal examination including direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. There are helpful charts and illustrations that guide the reader through the procedures. A thoughtful appendix is located at the end of the book which contains common terminology, abbreviations and medications.
Assessment: It must be stressed that this book is not intended to be used to treat or manage vision and ocular conditions. Instead it guides the reader through the proper techniques and skills necessary to collect the pertinent information that is necessary before a diagnosis or treatment is initiated. This goal makes this book very unique and desirable. Even though a plethora of information is included, it is presented in an easy to digest format. I would highly recommend this book for all new optometry students and ophthalmology residents to the clinic.
