Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British writer best known for his detective fiction featuring Sherlock Holmes. Originally a physician, the first of his four Holmes novels, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887 and he went on to become a prolific writer, producing over 50 short stories featuring Holmes as well as works of fantasy and science fiction, humour, plays, romances, historical novels and non-fiction. This novel was first published in 1890 and in 1915 a silent film adaptation was released.
