Overview

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series is full of magic and charm-and great for girls and boys alike. This is the first book in the fantastic prequel trilogy.

It is a time of Legends and a time of chaos, warlords vie for power and marauding outlaws roam the land, and an ancient malevolence that will threaten the very existence of the Great Ga'Hoole Tree has been loosed from the past. With his dying breath, Ezylryb tells Soren and Coryn to read the legends of Ga'Hoole hidden in his private library. There they find a world of treachery and magic in which a young king and queen struggle to keep peace while Grank, their most loyal friend and supporter, studies embers and flames in a distant land. Then a desperate plea comes from the king, and Grank rushes to the aid of his noble friends.

Editorial Reviews

With The First Collier, Newbery Honor winner Kathryn Lasky launches the prequel trilogy to her acclaimed Guardians of Ga'Hoole epic. In the deeply shrouded time of Legends, Good King and his queen Siv struggle against chaos and upheaval in their kingdom. Grank, another noble Spotted Owl, has exiled himself to Beyond the Beyond to perfect his firesight and his crafts, but a terrible crisis brings his peaceful sabbatical to a sudden stop. Mythic characters; riveting action.

NOVEMBER 2011 - AudioFile

Pamela Garelick embraces the roles of the many owls in the ninth volume of Lasky’s popular fantasy series. From his deathbed, a croaky-voiced Ezylryb sends Soren and Coryn to the Ga’Hoole archives for history lessons that feature the memories Grank, who discovered fire as a creative force in forging glass, then the first metal armaments. Garelick neatly balances the stories’ tempos, blending owl lore and Grank’s science lectures with owls’ grisly battles against the vile hagsfiends. The antiwar sentiments of Grank’s squeaky-voiced apprentice add interesting arguments to the story. Garelick masterfully portrays the array of owls as well as the unique natures of the wolf who guides Grank’s scientific discoveries and the polar bear who shares philosophical studies.
