The First Men in the Moon begins on a humorous note as Dr. Cavor, a scientist, is befriended by Mr. Bedford. They are neighbors in the village of Lympne, Kent, in southern England. Bedford is an English businessman who is a bit of a con man. He sees Cavor as someone he can exploit for his discoveries and inventions. The two use a gravity-repelling substance and are suddenly sent into space, heading for the moon on a spherical spaceship. The story now turns into a science fiction adventure. The two discover that creatures called Selenites, who resemble insects, live inside the moon; to their chagrin, they are taken prisoner by these alien beings.

The novel was first published in 1901 by George Newnes of London. The First Men in the Moon is considered to be a scientific romance novel. C.S. Lewis later admitted that he was greatly influenced by the book. There have been four film adaptations, including one for television.

About The Author

H.G. Wells (1866–1946), born Herbert George Wells, was an English author known for not only his popular science fiction books but also works of social commentary, history and biography. His first novel, The Time Machine, was published in 1895. Socially progressive and visionary in intellect, H.G. Wells became one of the most prolific writers of his generation. Through books like The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and War of the Worlds, Wells delved into a plethora of social, philosophical and political ideas through the medium of what we now call science fiction.
