Ryan Moore, the star running back for Saint Ignatius High School, is forced to go on the run from a gang member named Thurman Adams whom he humiliated in a youth program boxing match. On the night that Ryan's team won the City Championship, Thurman Adams invades Ryan's home, kills his mother, and then threatens to kill Ryan, forcing him to transfer to another high school under an assumed name.
Ryan faces many challenges at the new school. First of all, he is the only black student in a school located in a wealthy suburb. Secondly, the team already has a star running back who is about to break the State rushing record and is not about to be pulled from the starting position. Finally, the coach of the team has his own reasons for not making a change in the line-up.
Instead of working out with the varsity squad, Ryan is assigned to the scout team, and his chances of being able to play in a game and be noticed by college recruiters is remote.
Ryan and his nemesis, Thurman Adams, share one characteristic and that is persistence. While Ryan struggles to get a shot at the starting position on his new team, Thurman Adams concentrates on hunting down Ryan so he can kill him.
Both are destined to meet again. This time, it could be on a football field.
