Through his work with the nonprofit National Center for Healthcare Leadership, Dr. Garman helps healthcare organizations develop evidence-based approaches to leadership development that support their current and long-term strategic objectives.

Purpose: The purpose is to challenge readers to think about how these trends will impact their organizations' work. Secondarily, readers are challenged to seek innovative ways to take advantage of these trends.
Audience: Although not addressed by the authors, the audience appears to be anyone involved in or impacted by healthcare.
Features: The book has only eight succinct chapters that cover innovations and how they emerged, followed by the global context of the changes in healthcare demand and delivery. They highlight eight trends: digital health information, patients traveling for value, global cost competition, rising healthcare costs, establishing uniformity among practices and standards, negotiating on value, balancing primary and specialty care, and growing mobility of health professionals. One of the unique features is found in the appendix, which describes how to use these trends in strategic planning. It has no real shortcomings, but the book would have been strengthened if it had mentioned Millennium Development Goals as a driver in global health.
Assessment: There is no real competition for this book. While other books present trends within the context of policy, they do not outline how the trends started, how they are progressing, and then how they could be used in strategic organizational planning. This approach provokes thought and makes readers contemplate how to use this information in their own setting.
