The Getaway God (Sandman Slim Series #6)

Sandman Slim must save himself-and the entire world-from the wrath of some enraged and vengeful ancient gods in this sixth high-octane adventure in the New York Times bestselling series.

Being a half-human, half-angel nephilim with a bad rep and a worse attitude-not to mention temporarily playing Lucifer-James Stark aka Sandman Slim has made a few enemies. None, though, are as fearsome as the vindictive Angra Om Ya-the old gods. But their imminent invasion is only one of Stark's problems right now. LA is descending into chaos, and a new evil-the Wildfire Ripper-is stalking the city.

No ordinary killer, The Ripper takes Stark deep into a conspiracy that stretches from Earth to Heaven and Hell. He's also the only person alive who may know how to keep the world from going extinct. The trouble is, he's also Stark's worst enemy . . . the only man in existence Stark would enjoy killing twice.

Fans of horror and urban fantasy will love the high-octane thrills of The Getaway God, the sixth book in the bestselling Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey.

Kadrey delivers another slamming urban fantasy adventure in James "Sandman Slim" Stark's sixth foray. Stark reluctantly associates with the Golden Vigil to investigate a series of murders. As Los Angeles is enveloped in a portentous rainstorm, Stark and his part-time sidekick Candy come face-to-face with the oldest faction in the battle for control of the universe. A patron at the Bamboo House of Dolls bar is killed in magical crossfire, Candy is targeted from all directions, and Stark navigates myriad perils in a concerto of violence and improvisation. The novel is wall-to-wall action, and Stark careens from mayhem to chaos, doing battle with the recently deceased and those who can never die. His choices are anchored in the salvation of a video store, a donut shop, and a woman he can't be sure he knows. Under all the shock and gore, the heart of Sandman Slim still beats to its own delightfully unpredictable pace. (Aug.)

Trying to live a quiet life in L.A. was always probably a losing proposition for James Stark, the man formerly known as Sandman Slim (and for a brief period of time acting Lucifer in Hell), especially since the City of Angels is fraying at the seams. The old gods, known collectively as Angra Om Ya, are more determined than ever to break through to our realm, and our God is too fractured to stop them. It's up to Stark to save the city, as he's the only man who can control the Qomrama Om Ya, the only weapon effective against the invading deities. VERDICT This series has kept its energy well, even six volumes in, partially owing to the stubborn character of Stark. He doesn't evolve, per se; he's still a rude and violent walking weapon, but he never makes the same mistake twice. Using humor to leaven the tumult, Kadrey (Kill City Blues; Dead Set) shows that there are plenty of stories left to tell in Stark's world.
