Overview

Life consists of a series of problems, challenges, successes and failures. From the day we are born, every step is a learning event and a challenge to which we react. Each of us meets and deals with life's problems in our own way. This book is a compendium of my philosophy on how to live a life and meet its problems.
The thoughts and ideas expressed in these essays are a result of a lifetime of study, living, and learning. Over a long period, I repeatedly voiced my opinions on many subjects that I felt were important. After so any years of discussions about them, my wife Carole began to urge me to write about these ideas. I finally agreed, and these essays are the result.
After an early education in Science and Industrial Engineering, I continued during my entire life, reading and studying in Social and Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Business, Education, the Arts, and other areas of knowledge.
My essays begin with how to find a good and happy life, and the characteristics that make a good person. Political decisions effect all of us. Essays on equality, voting, freedom, progress, and government deal with the results.
Another group of essays discuss bringing up children to develop their maximum capabilities, love, and having a good marriage. What makes us successful at work is closely linked to the ability to run an effective business. Both topics are covered. Many of us have favorite places to live and vacation. I tell you mine. My fantasies on what I would do differently if I had a second chance in life are explained in two essays.
My life philosophy is detailed in depth in six final essays. The subjects reviewed are: my philosophy for living, the importance of being positive, and how to achieve it, the role of sports in life, why the arts are important, having fun and learning, and the role of luck in life.
I hope that some of these thoughts will help the reader in his or her personal journey through life.

About the Author

Bart has experienced a varied and diversified existence. From his early high school years at the Bronx High School of Science as a member of the chess team and the soccer team, to his years as an honors graduate in Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan, life was never dull. World War II interrupted his undergraduate time at Michigan. It was off to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, where he spent one year at sea during the war, one year at the academy, and then back to Engineering school at Michigan. After graduation, a stint as Quality Control Engineer was again interrupted, this time by the Korean war, where he served in the Marine Corps for two years. Working as an Industrial Engineer Bart studied for a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering at Columbia University.
After another short stint as an Industrial Engineer, destiny intruded again. The next twenty five years were spent running his own commercial finance company in New York City. During those years he was on the Board of Directors of the National Commercial Finance Conference. Bart took an early retirement, and moved to Sarasota, Florida to play tennis. Shortly thereafter, he became Treasurer of both the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and of the Excelsior Condominium Association. He was later President and Treasurer of the Excelsior Condominium Association.
A new interest in micro computers rapidly developed when the Sailing Squadron bought its first computer. Within a year Bart had both the Sailing Squadron and Excelsior doing their accounting on computers. Bart joined the Sarasota IBM PC Users Group, and later jointed the Manatee PC Users Group.. He was on the Boards of both groups. Bart became President of the Sarasota PCUG.
