Hippocrates neatly fits into the Great Minds of Ancient Science and Math series. There's just one problem: no one really knows much about him, or even if he is the author of the writings attributed to him. In fact, many historians assume he is not. So this book takes a broader view and begins with the era in which the Hippocratic texts were written, the Golden Age of Greece, the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E, and talks about what life was like then. What is actually known about Hippocrates is discussed, and subsequent chapters look at ancient medical practices. The book goes on to describe the Hippocratic oath, its origin, the four parts of the oath, and how it is used today. This interesting take on medicine concludes with several activities, a chronology, glossary, and notes.
