Professor Schiffman provides solidly interesting and enlightening information about the history, archeology, and literary nature of the Old Testament in this fourteen-part lecture series. But his presentation is marred by poor editing and production control. First, Schiffman's naturally gruff voice is made considerably worse by the uneven volume of the recording. And, as with many titles in the Modern Scholar series, the lecturer often stops and restarts sentences, giving the production an unfinished quality. Topics include explorations of the various sections of the Hebrew Bible, as well as lectures devoted to archeology, theology, the question of who wrote the Bible, the influence of the Hebrew Bible on Western culture, and a special session on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
