Guirec Soudée sails around the world on his yacht Yvinec accompanied by a red hen called Monique. At age 22, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean alone. At 23, he went 130 days without assistance stuck in ice near Greenland. At 24, he became the youngest navigator in the world to cross the Northwest Passage alone! He and Monique are currently crossing the Pacific Ocean.

Though Soudée first brought Monique along for her egg-laying, he explains, she soon became a valued companion. Soudée’s selfies show him hoisting the sails, navigating a route below deck, or on lookout at the boat’s bow—always with Monique alongside or perched atop him. A particularly striking image (taken with a drone camera) shows the sailboat trapped in ice, which forced Soudée and Monique to overwinter off the coast of Greenland, Monique wearing a sweater made of gloves. Once the ice melts, Soudée and Monique sail on, succeeding in becoming “the youngest navigator and first chicken ever to sail the Northwest Passage.” Readers are likely to be as fascinated by Soudée’s relationship with Monique as they are by the beauty and peril of their incredible voyage. Their journey made him, at age 24, the youngest navigator to negotiate the Northwest Passage alone, and this picture book illustrated with photographs from their voyage will delight readers with its humor and sense of wonder. Some photos taken with a drone camera provide breathtaking aerial views of the yacht in Arctic surroundings. Others will provoke laughter at the unlikely sight of a hen standing in snow while wearing a makeshift sweater Soudée fashioned for her out of gloves or strutting across a vast sheet of ice. Throughout, handsome book design employs creative framing to make each spread delight the eye. The most dramatic moment comes when the ice traps the boat, compelling the pair to overwinter in the Arctic for four months. Monique survives on seeds and dried insects stored on the yacht, and her eggs keep Soudée well-fed until the ice breaks and they continue their journey. An engaging, helpful backmatter map of the journey with additional photos and facts might have better served readers as frontmatter, but this quibble is only true for the first trips through a distinctive book that will likely inspire many rereadings.
