John Cannon held the chair of Modern History at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne until 1992.
Anne Hargreaves was formerly a clinical academic at Welsh National School of Medicine, and Universities of Liverpool and Newcastle.

Cannon (Aristocratic Century) and Hargreaves (formerly with Welsh National Sch. of Medicine) briefly explore mythical rulers like Lear, Cole, and Arthur. Thereafter, content is organized chronologically, with entries running several paragraphs. Before the Norman Conquest, monarchs are categorized by region. After 1066, they appear under ruling House.
