An Interview with Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Q. Do you like being square?
A. At first I didn't, but now I love it! I didn't understand that being "different" is perfectly normal. We are all "different" -- that's what makes the world a fun place. Imagine if everyone looked and thought the same way...BORING!
Q. Why were the other pumpkins mean to you?
A. Because they had never seen a square pumpkin before, they thought all pumpkins should be round. So they judged me by the part of me they could see. But once they took the time to get to know me, they realized it's not what you look like that matters, it's who you are, and how you act that really counts. Now we're all friends!
Q. Did the farmer grow you special?
A. Nope. The farmer was as surprised as everyone else that one of the pumpkins he grew was square.
Q. What is you favorite color?
A. My favorite color is orange, because it means autumn is here, and that means Halloween is coming. I love Halloween. Don't you?
Q. Do you want to be round?
A. No. I'm very happy just being who I am.
Q. Do square pumpkins have square seeds?
A. As a matter of fact, it seems that a square pumpkin's seeds can be any shape: square, round, triangular, it doesn't seem to matter. I guess you can't judge a seed by its cover either.
Q. Was it fun to be a hero?
A. I don't really think of myself as a hero, but it was great to be able to help the other pumpkins.
Q. Why do you think you grew square?
A. That's a tough one...
Maybe so the other pumpkins could learn a few lessons, like...
- Never be embarrassed of who you are.
- Believe in yourself.
- Give a new kid a chance.
- Don't judge people by their looks.
- Always expect the unexpected.
- And most important of all...to show everyone it really is hip to be square!
Q. How does it feel to have a book written about you?
A. It's a little embarrassing, but it does give me a chance to meet all sorts of interesting people and make a lot of new friends, so I guess I'm really glad it happened.
Q. Do you have anything you want to say to your new friends?
A. I hope you all like the book, and remember when you go out trick or treating...
- Carry a flashlight.
- Walk, don't run.
- Stay on sidewalks.
- Obey traffic signals.
- Stay in familiar neighborhoods.
- Make sure your costume doesn't drag on the ground.
- Only go to houses that are lit.
- And most important of all...have fun!
Happy Halloween, Everybody!
