Editorial Reviews

July 2023 - AudioFile

In this revised 10th anniversary edition of Peter Singer's guide to giving thoughtfully to those in need worldwide, a diverse ensemble, including the author himself, take turns enlivening each chapter. Voices ranging from legendary musician Paul Simon's soft Jersey drawl, actress Kristen Bell's upbeat tones, and model/philanthropist Natalia Vodianova's Russian-accented words lend an eclectic blend of empathy to Singer's simple but uncomfortable question: Why don't we give more? The listening experience is somewhat dampened by references to the text version that don't convert well to the audio format. But Singer's exhaustive research on why we are more compelled to give financial support to people we know over anonymous strangers living in abject poverty remains fascinating. And it takes so little to make a difference. E.E. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
