By examining these verses from their Hebrew background, we discover that they are much more like zen sayings than they are like spiritual enrichment instructions. This view of the Beatitudes shows us that they speak about the qualities of the citizens of the Kingdom of God, qualities that are nearly universally rejected by most cultures. Everything about this Kingdom is backwards.
