The packaging for this item, in its various physical and online versions, shows the words The Magic Flute in large print, but listeners should be apprised that it is not a performance of Mozart's opera. German versions of the release show the text Das Vermaechtnis der Zauberfloete ("The Legacy of the Magic Flute") in considerably smaller text. What is happening is that this is a soundtrack to an original film about a music student who is transported, Spirited Away-style, through a portal into the world of Mozart's opera. There must have been a substantial budget for this German production to allow for payment to all the singers to record the material in both German and English. Listeners should check the version to make sure it agrees with what they want, for there are no texts in the booklets. English versions have the titles in English. In addition to the soundtrack versions, which have only musical numbers, the project appears in German as a "Hoerbuch," or listening book, which contains dialogue from the film. For German speakers, this may be interesting, for it gives the flavor of the story; the film is unlike anything else hitherto attempted with opera. Some of the music is Mozart's, with new numbers, instrumental passages, and connecting material by composer Martin Stock. The sound is rendered as taken from the film. So one should not pick this as a recording of the opera, although the performances -- featuring soprano Sabine Devieilhe as the Queen of the Night -- are fine. As a keepsake for the film or as a way into an intriguing project, it can be recommended. ~ James Manheim
