Description: This book presents a broad overview of current modern management of stone disease and the particular problems encountered introducing newer technologies in developing countries. This is the 38th book in the Developments in Nephrology series, which was initiated in 1981.
Purpose: The book's primary purpose is to address the issues surrounding the permeation of expensive, high technology into developing countries where healthcare dollars are, in many instances, severely restricted. As the editors state, the world in now a "global village" and this issue will have pertinence not only to citizens of developing nations but also to the Western world. Rational and judicious use of the new technologies for urinary stone disease are succinctly presented.
Audience: This book will be attractive not only to urology and nephrology residents in training, but also to individuals concerned with public health and healthcare economic issues, especially in developing countries. Most of the contributors are from Pakistan and represent leaders at their respective institutions. Additionally, there are contributions from individuals in the United States, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
Features: Illustrations, although not numerous, are pertinent and figures and tables are used sparingly to summarize large amounts of data. Each chapter is followed by numerous and contemporary references. The book size (350 pages) is attractive as is the style of type, making for easy reading. Most attractive about this book is its succinct overview of the current management of urinary stone disease. With the advent of multiple new forms of technology, the practicing clinician is often faced with a number of treatment options. He or she must consider not only efficacy and morbidity, but also costs. These issues are even more important in developing countries.
Assessment: This book will be a valuable addition to the libraries of nephrology and urology departments and also those interested in healthcare economy. Although the economic issues are primarily addressed with respect to developing nations, these are some very valid concepts that can be applied to the more industrialized nations.
