"The May Queen" is an enchanting idyl of English rural life.

This poem is a breathe a religious spirit, a belief in God's power and in his sufficiency. So Tennyson's ideals were pitched on a high plane, so high that he was always striving for perfection. He was so deeply in earnest that he threw heart and soul into nearly everything that he undertook. He chose the finest things in life and ignored the base; and, with an inborn power to see beauty, he tried to lead others to see it. Human progress was his belief; and that progress, gradual as it must be 'to be sure, could come only by the awakening of high ideals, and by the doing of good.
