About the Author

Professor Philip Yeagle is Emeritus Professor at the University of Connecticut. He has previously held the positions of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and then Interim Chancellor at Rutgers University, Head of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut, professor at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and several visiting professorships at the University of Oxford and one at the CSIRO, Australia. He has published over 150 papers and book chapters and has written or edited eight books. In 2016 he was awarded the Avanti Award in Lipids by the Biophysical Society and was elected a Fellow of the AAAS. Much of his research focused on the structures and roles of lipids in cell membranes. His Current research efforts are addressing unsolved problems in membrane protein structure.

This is a short book written by a single author that is intended for students, probably graduate students, and researchers in the area of cell membranes. The major strengths of the book are in the area of membrane biophysics and biochemistry. It is a second edition; I am unfamiliar with the first edition. "According to the author, the book is intended for graduate (?) or advanced undergraduate (?) students of cell membranes. He also states that researchers in the field may find it useful. It is based on a course taught by the author. It might be included as part of a larger course on the cell biology of membranes. "It is not clear for whom the book is intended. The biophysical/biochemical content is fairly complete, but the biology is quite superficial. There is relatively little on the structure and function of biologic membranes in cells and tissues. There is rather little on the interactions of the plasma membrane with underlying cytoskeletal elements or clathrins. The value of the book to membrane researchers is limited. "The writing is acceptable, but in places the style is too casual; on page 6 the author writes that the myelin produced by the Schwann cell is a simple membrane containing mostly lipid and a couple of proteins. Myelin is hardly a simple membrane and it contains more than a couple of proteins. The illustrations are fair; there could be more on the electron microscopy of cells. The references are adequate. "Because the intended audience is most likely advanced undergraduates, this book would not be as useful as a reference book in a library because of the numerous monographs and reviews on cell membranes that are published yearly. Its strengths are the biophysical andbiochemical content, but I find the inadequate treatment of the biologic aspects of membrane function a serious shortcoming.
