Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was a French poet, artist, playwright, novelist, republican, and civil rights champion. His works LES MISÉRABLES and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME are read widely throughout the world. Although for much of his life he was a Catholic and a monarchist, Hugo's views began to change after the 1848 revolutions. Later in life he was a dedicated republican and freethinker.
