Nursing scholars, practitioners, and students share their experiences with mentoring in informative and thought-provoking ways. The concept of mentoring is analyzed in terms of process, context, and cross-cultural expansion to illustrate its utility in the nursing profession.
Purpose: The editors stress nurses' need to mentor each other for personal empowerment and expansion of the profession. These are worthy objectives, since mentorship can lead to greater job satisfaction and improved learning among nursing students and practitioners. The numerous stories told by nurses as well as the contributors' research and models achieve these objectives.
Audience: This book was written for all nurses whether they are nursing researchers, practitioners, or students. Mentoring can be practiced by every nurse, regardless of specialty. Anyone interested in mentoring would find it beneficial.
Features: The use of multiple and diverse mentoring perspectives lays a firm foundation for understanding the concept of mentoring and how it can best be used. This book offers both a theoretical base and practical application for mentoring. While the epilogue gives suggestions for creating a "new paradigm of mentor connections," suggestions for how mentoring might be operationalized in these difficult and changing times in healthcare would have been beneficial.
Assessment: This book is highly motivational. Hopefully, the editors will consider writing a guide to successful mentoring in other healthcare settings.
