Overview

This album consists of 25 mariachi songs, recorded mostly for Victor and Columbia (there is also one cylinder made for Edison). As you'd expect the fidelity is pretty minimal -- these were recorded acoustically, onto wax discs or cylinders -- but is actually not so bad, although the limited frequency range means that the bass is virtually absent. The value of these recordings is primarily historical, but it's not impossible to enjoy them on their own merits. Certainly the ebullience, energy, and emotions of the performers on these sones (nineteenth century Mexican country songs) comes through. More material by Cuarteto Coculense is available on Arhoolie's Mariachi Coculense. ~ Richie Unterberger
