Overview

As with a multitude of sailors and boat builders, (I have built and sailed my own) or those who would want to be, I fell in love with Howard Chapelle's books on those wooden craft found in the America of days past. As with his seminal volume, American Small Sailing Craft, The Migrations of an American Boat Type spoke to many us, especially those, like me, who are enamored of the simple working boat known generically as a "sharpie."
However, there was a problem: Finding a well-made volume was a challenge. I decided to help alleviate that with this version. I improved the quality of the available images, chose an agreeable typeface and laid it out for the benefit of the reader. Perfect? Maybe not, but I believe (hope!) this is the most accessible version that can be had. And, no, I did not create it as an eBook because the all-important images just don't translate well, as commented on by readers and reviewers of such electronic versions. Nope, a good old paperback that can be lugged in a backpack or on-board or sit proudly on a marina bar, and would be recognized by Mr. Chapelle and his peers.
I hope you enjoy this effort in good health, fair winds and a following tide!
