Overview

The second disc in Shanachie's two-volume set collecting field recordings and early 78s by traditional Kentucky musicians recorded between 1927 and 1937, this installment, like the first, brings together ragged string bands and an assortment of delightfully singular fiddle, banjo and guitar players. Among the odd yet endearing gems here are Hayes Shepherd's crude, haunting and moving banjo piece "Hard for to Love," Luther Strong's soaring solo fiddle on "Glory in the Meeting House," and a pair of banjo classics, "My Mama Always Talked to Me" and "Little Birdie" by John Hammond. ~ Steve Leggett
