Description: This is an excellent book on the complex neuropsychiatric problems common to patients who suffer headaches. Comorbidity is the rule in headache patients and thus, in order to help them, clinicians are required understand the directional nature of headache with its comorbidities. This book, written and edited by clinicians in the field, is a welcome addition to the neuropsychiatric literature.
Purpose: The editors note, "We have brought specialists together from a wide variety of disciplines in order to address the dramatic complexity of the headache sufferer," adding, "understanding of the complexities of how the conditions and their management influence each disorder is key to a successful treatment outcome of the patient's suffering."
Audience: The intended audience includes headache specialists, neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, and neuropsychologists.
Features: The book covers the epidemiology of psychiatric comorbidities of headache, migraine, tension-type, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, stress, drug dependence, psychosis, chronic daily headache, stress management, personality disorders, complementary and alternative treatment approaches, and somatoform disorders. Each chapter ends with timely and pertinent citations of the scientific literature.
Assessment: This is an informative and useful book covering important and often neglected issues in the care and treatment of patients suffering from headache. I highly recommend it.
