If not for the brilliance and fervor of Paul Blazer, what is now known as Ashland Inc. could never have existed. What started as a single refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, became-by the time Blazer dies-one of the largest and most influential companies in the nation. Blazer was steadfast in his hard work and dedication, and installed in the company a drive and a passion that added to the company's success. Blazer's influence-and his legend-still lives strong, for it was his sprit and exacting principals that molded what was once Ashland Oil & Refining Inc., a diversified corporation whose products touch all of our lives.
Early in its history, Ashland learned hot to be proactive. It learned how to anticipate and prepare for global events - before they too the world by surprise. In essence, Ashland learned how to diversify. Over time, the company broadened its spectrum of products and services to include those that were not so heavily influenced by the ever-changing price of oil. In other words, Ashland would control its own destiny.
