The multiple contributors to this text illustrate a new approach to midwifery care which maintains the art while enhancing evidence based practice. The book is divided into three sections which are core to the new midwifery practice: effective and appropriate care, transition to parenting, and physical adaptation and growth in pregnancy, birth, and early life. The purpose is to illustrate new approaches to midwifery care in response to the changes occurring in practice and the educational level for entry into midwifery. These revolutionary changes bring the need for a new midwifery text, which these editors provide. This book is appropriately written for student midwives and midwives studying for higher degrees or those ensuring their practice remains competent and current. The text would be of interest to other obstetrical healthcare providers as well to illustrate how practice can be personal while scientifically based. The editors and contributors are previously published and recognized names in their fields of expertise, giving credibility to this new text. The content is covered in three sections. In the first section on effective and appropriate care, the focus is on ensuring that care is beneficial and that harm is avoided. The second section, transition to parenting, is a description of childbearing as a social as well as a physical process. The third section, physical adaptation and growth in pregnancy, birth, and early life, contains information about the physiological adaptation to pregnancy from conception through the infant's early life.
