This text presents comprehensive review of the recommendations of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology for reporting results of respiratory cytology specimens along with advances in diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive immunohistochemical and molecular techniques which can be performed on cytology specimens.The majority of the text focuses on the standardized terminology and nomenclature for respiratory cytology as recommended by the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology. Each of the diagnostic categories are described in depth and formal definitions for each category are given along with cytologic criteria. Explanatory notes are given discussing limitations of the category as well as its malignancy risk and reproducibility. Management recommendations are supplied for each category. Purpose: The aim is to provide a reference manual that comprehensively covers respiratory cytology. The book contains up-to-date information and specific criteria designed to standardize reporting terminologies. It also includes information for ancillary studies/techniques. At only 151 pages, this book aims to be a "field manual" for cytopathologists. The authors achieve their stated goals.
Audience: This book should benefit practicing cytopathologists as well as pathology residents and cytopathology fellows.
Features: The nine chapters feature numerous tables, figures, and color microphotographs. The chapters are overviews of diagnostic terminology and reporting with six diagnostic categories. Each such category chapter is divided into background, definition, cytologic criteria, explanatory notes, and sample reports. The book goes to great lengths to put respiratory diagnostic entities and their associated cytology findings into one of the categories. The accompanying microphotographs, for the most part, are useful, but a few of them are taken at inappropriate power or appear blurry. All figures and tables are accompanied by useful legends. A very useful feature is the group of appendixes, which serves as a condensed version of the book and can be used for a quick lookup of criteria.
Assessment: As a book that aims to standardize respiratory cytology reporting, its ultimate success lies in the acceptance by practicing cytopathologists. Despite the suboptimal quality of some microphotographs, this book is a well-written and much-needed guideline from the Papanicolaou Society to further push for standardization of cytopathology reporting.
