CHAPTER 1

ACT I: THE PAST

A Declaration of Independence

(Chapters 1 to 5)


Since we all seemingly understand that the past is over, unalterable and arguably unchangeable, it beckons us to explore one obvious contradiction in human behavior. Why is it that we appear to spend so much time revisiting days gone by to dwell upon the reruns of our lives? For what reasons do we choose to effectively replay bygone moments? Since we have all done this, there is no judgment implied, but it is only an attempt to understand our own reasons for choosing to spend our time in this manner. Act I helps us examine these questions from the following three (3) foundational perspectives:

I. Our inherited collective history as a human race(What we term as current events could also be considered as our unconscious allegiance to old patterns condemning us to chronic repetition of past.)

II. Our individual experiences that we all share in common(This pertains to the journey from birth to death.)

III. Our uniquely individual journey as one of billions of individual beings(This will be demonstrated by sharing personal stories from various sources.)


By first identifying some common ground we all share, we can heighten our awareness as we proceed revisiting some of the past together. Beginning with some familiar frames of reference from public life, we also integrate aspects of our individual experiences that are familiar to us. Acknowledging some common understandings of our human histories, we can compare various accounts regarding our origins of creation from the darkness and out of nothingness (e.g., from Genesis, to big bang, and beyond). In examining human nature through these well-known religious and cultural traditions and more recent scientific discovery, we can begin to review our many past footprints in the history of the human wilderness. I believe these vantage points all help bear witness to our intuitive and marvelous ability to move out from the darkness toward the light of a brighter future.

While this is a practical approach in one sense, it also provides us a parallel opportunity to at least reflect upon a more mystical source of an inner light so often referenced in almost every tradition. Depending upon your own reflective journey, discovering such an inner strength might provide a valuable resource in dealing with the well-documented difficulties of our constantly changing existence. By shedding new light upon the aging foundations of our past, we may potentially free ourselves to rise to greater heights as we rise up and choose to move forward in constructing new foundational truths in building for future generations.

Whether we do this with courage and grace in the current age is an opportunity we have been entrusted with, and like it or not, it is a responsibility we all share together. As is always true, one is free to passively ignore the choices of changing times, but at what peril?

Proceeding onward, one might notice that our story of who we each appear to be identified by others or by our own ego's self-perception does not fully describe who we truly are as individuals in the deepest private sense. While our unique identities serve a relevant purpose in our daily lives, these assumptions and descriptions can lessen in their importance as we age. As we become increasingly aware of our nature, we stand to discover (actually rediscover) that our true story is an important part of a more timeless universal experience. Deep down, we all have implanted within us a sense of being both a unique creation while also sharing in common an even greater global destiny If we can come to understand this one example of our dual reality (duality), we might empower ourselves to consciously and confidently move ahead in a more positive way. Increasingly, we can experience the joy implicit in sharing our true destiny! Shared experiences are a powerful force. Just consider for instance a dynamic and emotionally moving concert or an exciting sports event where tens of thousands of people join to ecstatically celebrate living. Some specific examples of these three foundational perspectives follow.


I. A Sampling of Our Collective History as a Human Race

A recognizable snapshot of a shared public experience includes the unanimous declaration of the thirteen colonies as the sovereign United States of America.

"When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."


Harboring Hope

This cherished American document, a prophetic paradigm, Speaks to mankind in declaring this foundation of liberty. Yet it unites us by separating both church and state, Joining us together, removing ties that bind religious debates.

A universally cherished statement echoes worldwide for all equally created beings to hear.

This single declaration inspires all humankind with hope, by virtue of our common origins.

Our divine birthright of freedom thus birthed a nation yet without regard to a nationality.

Drawing its strength from the diverse sources documented by our historical volatility.

Contradictions abounded alongside this vision with a balance of power in mind, Combining to create an ingenious foundation for the future of humankind.

United in this diversity, this statement against separation beckons our liberating reunion,

Appealing to all souls around the globe in one anticipated union.

This is the genius and vision of these prophetic American documents, Perhaps more philosophical than political, more spiritual than social, It is little wonder that leagues of nations continue to unite nations, To give birth to immigrants visions of our original source of oneness.


II. Elements of Our Individual Experiences That We Share in Common

Our birth and death serve as visibly obvious bookends of our transitory physical existence, but what of the deeper nature of what lies in-between the experiences of our personal and multidimensional lives? Noticing the most basic aspects of our individual lives cannot help but lead us to observe and galvanize a shared sense of kinship to the human family. The essential requirement for food and water easily demonstrate the most common nourishment we all need from Mother Earth for our mutual sustenance. Such snapshots are simple, but they help us see our need to share resources and picture new images of our evolving unity with each new earthly revolution.

Observe how maps are forever redrawn. Witness how humankind now finds itself bordering on unlimited potential. Boundaries are expanding beyond previously perceived limitations of the past times or a future in space. Overcoming perceptions of an old world, we may now see through illusions where populations appeared forever separated by oceans of adversity. By acknowledging universally outdated notions of a flat world that never really did hold water, we can better envision what lies beyond the present view of navigating our personal stormy seas with greater possibilities. Can our commonly shared experiences contribute to a shared vision for our future world? In contrast, can celebrating our individual uniqueness also help us see the link to our common bonds, so creatively exemplified as strung together by our DNA?

We need to comprehend that our DNA lives beyond our merely biological understandings to also symbolically view these genealogical building blocks anew and better redefined as:

Do Not Again choose to be separated as a human family ... ... and further wrapping ourselves around this double helix as our

Destiny of Never-ending Affinity!


III. Everyone's Unique Personal Journey

Integrated into this book's first act is the prose and poetry relating to my personal story. Within our singular individual rhythms, we sometimes experience discordant periods while at other times, we feel sweetly synchronized with all of life. I have certainly felt the elation and deflation of this dichotomy.

On the positive end, I have been blessed with so many glorious aspects of joy in this life. One reason is that early on, I was privileged to have been exposed to many diverse influences. Specifically, I genuinely benefited from exposure to the world's many faith traditions, each with its own cherished written words. Personally knowing individuals whose loving examples spoke positively to living their respective faith traditions with integrity also assisted me in developing a genuine love for all humankind. Over time, I was further privileged to listen in person to the Dalai Lama, Billy Graham, and Pope John Paul II, where I observed both the blessings and unholy blindness of institutionalized religions.

While I have certainly benefited from positive expressions of various faith communities, I have also witnessed disturbing negativities. Here I have often heard sermons of separation preached over unity, human hatred sown by promoting fear of differences rather than demonstrating faith in a professed loving creator, let alone loving one's fellow man. Such contradictions eventually drew me to read many modern-day messengers whose writings to me reflect a divine inspiration to humankind, not unlike the revered ancient scribes of the world's religions.

Authors Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch, Caroline Myss, Marianne Williamson, Eckhart Tolle, Ken Carey, Louise Hay, Esther and Jerry Hicks, Gary Renard, Leo Hartong, David Hawkins, Daphne Rose Kingma, Diana Richardson, David Deida, Lynn Taggart, and Mantak Chia are just some of these present-day prophets whose insights have touched me and millions more. These authors significantly contributed to my growth and development in the same manner as many of the primary influences of my youth had. These included the courageous twentieth-century examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All of these authors have validated and reaffirmed for me the path which has always been unfolding in the experiences of my own life. I smile widely as I look back and see how hindsight can provide us with a meaningful panoramic view, regardless of whether our experiences were good, bad, or indifferent.

In the midst of my retrospective smiling, I seriously see that we are living at a time of an emerging awareness and a shift in consciousness unfolding around the globe. It is simply a great time to be alive, perilous as it may also be! Significant signs are everywhere. Witness the proliferation of authors offering insights and understandings of such rapid historical changes and their crystallization of our ability to freely choose calamity or creativity. Evolving insights on our spiritual nature alongside miraculous scientific and technological advancement serve each of us with a great opportunity to revisit our personal past and cocreate our inevitable future together.

With increased awareness, we can better use our rather recently acquired freedoms to also consciously choose our individual path. At the same time, we are collectively deciding our planet's future and the future of generations to come. Perhaps at this moment, our generation can bring a renewed meaning to the term "the greatest generation." For example, consider the undeniable intent of those who sacrificed their lives to provide a better future for us. Such were the heroic sacrifices of our forefathers whose generation once expressed quite categorically their desired goal in fighting World War I as "a war to end all wars."


What I am asking here is simply this:

Does anyone truly believe in their heart that our fathers, mothers, grandparents, or any of our ancestors would now want their offspring to be fighting a WWIII? If they could come back and speak to us from the grave today, what do you think would they say to us about repeating the past? Perhaps the lessons from our personal and public past can now contribute to creating new approaches for our collective inspiration. If, for instance, Northern Ireland (after centuries of hurtful and hateful repetition) can courageously turn down a new road of hope and peace for previously divided populations, can we not piece together new paths of understanding to other puzzling problems on our planet? Even the globe's borders appear as shapes used in a jigsaw puzzle! Can we think, pray, and act now to begin solving this together?

In summarizing the past in the first section of this book, I pause to share one of my relevant holistic healing pursuits. I recall attending a unique healing experience led by a shamanic healer who turned out to be profoundly spiritual as well. This particular experience was a very simple spiritual ritual consisting of a meditation where I wrote down in advance my most painful or disturbing memories. It culminated in a prayerful time to acknowledge their hurt, followed by a releasing of painful remaining emotions by literally lighting a fire to my list, and in effect release past pains. The noticeable result was a freeing up of my energies to move forward with my life in a most positive way. When I now recall my past, it no longer has any negative or haunting power over me, but I actually draw energy and strength from my understanding of how even perceived mistakes and unwanted negative experiences have served me well in terms of my formative personal and spiritual growth. With this understanding, forgiveness began to flow as a natural outcome, and so did my personal healing.

I share this healing session to demonstrate how our uniquely personal past can reveal new insights in the present. Our past need not paralyze us but can be used to benefit us in a healthy manner. Our life lessons have the potential to reveal fresh observations of what we share in common as a human race. This simple understanding is critical to our healing, and it blesses us with the ability to respect differing individual paths in our present times.

Appreciation of this dynamic offers us wisdom to quietly witness how various nations, cultures, religions, and other institutions can all contribute to divine insights beneficial for the future of all. Herein lies the link where initial individual healing precedes the collective healing of all peoples and our planet. Many parts all serve one body.

Poetry can sometimes serve to transport us far above the world's daily obstacles and routines. For example, when we take a moment to rise above any chaos and calmly look down to view life, such a lofty perspective can provide opportunities to observe openings in the clouds. As we peer through these veiled illusions of an often foggy physical world, a panoramic view can reveal clearer insights into our true eternal nature. In doing so, we become the key to opening the door on a journey into a special dimension within everyone. As others observe us living a more peaceful and joyful life, they too will be positively impacted by our change.

Embarking upon this reflective journey, here's a quick reminder to permit yourself to read the prose in a manner that translates to the corresponding relevance of your own stories and your own life in this world. (As a reader, you might even consider keeping your own progressive journal as you read any relevant passages or reflect upon the poetry that might assist you in charting your own lifelong journey.)

Chapters 1–5 focus upon the past and our historical origins of dependency, sometimes enforced or even willingly accepted. These chapters present many cross-sections of daily life in helping us observe our past in a healthy manner that can empower us to face the present and future with greater clarity. So with a conscious declaration of our personal independence, we prepare ourselves to travel farther down a road of greater awareness and truer freedom. Along the way, remember that you are ever free to turn down any road on your explorations in life. May whatever roads you choose be a blessing, and above all, enjoy the journey!
