Overview

Writing has been considered as an art form in many cultures since time immemorial, not just regarding the shapes and styles of letters and pictograms, but also as an expression of meaning.
'The Pen' takes this idea further by looking at the in depth process of this art, showing where the thought behind the words comes from and how an inherent state of essential mind may bridge the gap between conflicting perspectives.
It is life's greatest purpose to be able to use this tool as a practical application in our daily lives as it is the very core of our nature, an intrinsic awareness that is pure, stainless and simply knowing its essential nature, yet containing the greatest potential of the human being.
As an allegory of this, in the text itself the writer talks directly to a pen that is about to write something, telling it to place mind in a natural state of awareness and let the words pour forth through its nib so that this perfect state may never be lost in the words that arise on the blank page, but just be transformed into them.
This monologue continues to encourage the pen, as the writer, to thus echo this ultimate mode of being into the mind of the reader of the text and in this way achieve the highest aim of writing by coming from a totally unbiased viewpoint so as not to confuse the reader with different perspectives and individual judgments.
It is emphasized that its sole aim must be to express what it has to say accurately, so that what emerges through it will be pure and clear from its source awareness rather than fabricated with its own points of view.
'The Pen ...A Way of Writing' is a revised edition of the first section of 'The Rainbow Bridge...directly perceiving emptiness whilst holding appearance', a comprehensive compilation conveying an overall understanding of the nature of awareness.

About the Author

Susan M. Griffith-Jones was born in the United Kingdom in 1973. Having completed her education there, both curiosity as well as a keen interest in life at large led her to leave the country to settle in pastures beyond that of her native culture.
Thus making integrated travel the basis of her adult life, she has been following her interest of moving around and living in many different countries of the world, spending years at a time in different locations and absorbing the essential aspects of the peoples and places she stays in.
After arriving in Nepal in 2001 and having taken refuge at the feet of her Guru, His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, himself a Master of Masters, she received initiation into the vast spectrum of great teachings and spiritual practises of the Vajrayana path of Tibetan Buddhism and underwent various spiritual retreats to attempt realisation.
Susan currently lives with her family on a mountainside overlooking the Kullu-Manali valley in the heart of the Himalayas, where nature is her inspiration. She feels that the balance of our existence with that of our environmental habitat is what creates harmonious living and that our spiritual practise should encompass every aspect of our day-to-day lives.
Photography, filmmaking and other forms of writing such as journalistic articles and poems are also her keen interests. A full range of her recent work may be seen on her website, www.pyramidkey.com
