Overview

Subtitled "A Collection of Vintage Popular Recordings 1903-1924," Phonograph Entertains wide-ranging CD includes early dance music, a few vocal numbers, marches, bits of early jazz and even a humorous (and timeless) monologue by Will Rogers. Although somewhat randomly programmed and lacking any real liner notes beyond a listing of the contents, the program gives today's listeners an idea as to what could be heard on 78s circa 1920, only leaving out classical music and opera. Most of the selections are pretty rare and, while the jazz content is mostly pretty low, many of the performances have infectious rhythms and at least a slight jazz feel. ~ Scott Yanow
