About the Author

Joseph Pickering Colley was born in Rosedale, England in 1879. As a young man, he traveled to the United States in 1905. Upon arrival at Ellis Island, he boarded a train to Pennsylvania where he got work in a coal mine. He then traveled to San Francisco and was there when the 1906 earthquake occurred. When Joseph was 39 years old, he received a telegram from YMCA headquarters to report to France to help with morale and physical fitness of the Allied Troops. Unexpectedly, he ended up on the front line in The Battle of Chateau-Thierry. So far, three diaries have been discovered by his granddaughter in the family's garage. Joseph writes in detail and exhibits the tenderness of his heart and mind, while also including historical details.
