Overview

New York. 1951. The NYPD. This is a work of fiction. With the exception of mayors O’Dwyer and Impellitteri, who were historical figures, all characters and events herein, some of which may have been suggested by actual cases, are a product of the author’s imagination, and are not to be confused with real people or events then or now. However, The Bureau of Special Services and Investigation, known to some as BOSSI, and to others as The Red Squad, did exist during World War II and through much of the Cold War, as did similar Red Squads in other big cities. They worked largely in secret. Strict legality was not always observed. Suspects’ rights were sometimes trampled, careers and lives destroyed. In New York BOSSI lasted until 1970 when, because of the sinister reputation it had by then acquired, its cases and most of its personnel were quietly folded into the newly created Intelligence Division where, for some time longer, under its new name, it operated much as it had in the past.

About the Author

Robert Daley is a former New York Times foreign correspondent, and the author of 29 books, including Prince of the City, Year of the Dragon, and Portraits of France, and his magazine articles and stories have appeared in most of America’s major magazines. In 1971-72 he served as a New York City deputy police commissioner, and a number of books, both fiction and non-fiction, came out of the experiences and insights from that year. In the course of his career the author has managed to get deep inside a number of worlds, including wine, opera, pro football, bullfighting, grand prix racing, treasure diving, and journalism, in addition to the police, and has written about them. Eight of his books were sold to the movies, six of which were filmed, including Year of the Dragon and Prince of the City. His work has been translated into languages from Japan to Portugal--fifteen in all. He is married with three daughters, and divides his time between suburban New York and Nice, France.
