The Reward is a beautiful memoir, in spite of some violence. Before Tijuana became a murder capital, it was a land of stereotypes for tourists. For many, it has always been home. The novel starts with a flashback to 1970 and builds to a cartel killing in 2002. Along the way, kids grow up, live their dreams and face their nightmares. Scattered details turn out to be pieces of a frightening puzzle that locks together perfectly.

The Reward is an exquisitely paced, evocative story, centered on the life of Antonio, a young man born to a middle class Mexican family just south of the border in Tijuana. The novel opens with Antonio hastily writing a quasi-autobiography, while slowly dying from kidney failure. He is in the U.S. witness protection program, and the reader is effectively pulled into this mystery, which is tantalizingly refreshed throughout this well-crafted tale.

The best kind of books are the ones that make you want to write. The Reward by R.Singh (ISBN: 978-0-9842019-0-7) does just that.
It starts off interestingly as the writer uses rich imagery to paint vivid pictures of his childhood. The writing here creates such strong impressions, that I shared his nostalgia, when he recollects his childhood memories towards the end of his life. It momentarily made me pine for some of my own childhood… that I like to think about, very little.
